Wood drill bits is optimised for drilling wood. Wood drill bits are also called a brad point bit or a dowelling bit.
They are ideal for drilling dowel holes as the sides of these holes needs to be clean and accurate.
The main reason for the sharp pointed spur is to be pushed into the wood to keep the wood drill bit in line, it also helps to position the drill accurately where precision is essential.
The outside cutting edges cut the fibres neatly preventing messy fibres pulling out of the wood. The outside cutting edges of the bit lead, so that it cuts the periphery of the hole before the inner parts plane off the base of the hole.
